Leather is sold by the square foot. Since leather is a natural material, each hide size is unique, but an average hide size can range from 40 to 48sqft. The fact that leather is irregularly shaped, there will always be a waste factor in the cutting of leather. The industry has developed a standard formula for converting fabric yardage to leather square footage which factors in the waste.
The formula is that one linear yard of 54″ wide fabric equals 18 square feet of leather, based on hides averaging 40 to 48sqft. It is always best to inform us if really large cut sizes will be needed, that way we can specifically pick the hides to meet your requirements. Below are basic measurements of a typical hide.
